Virtuous opinion change in structured groups

چکیده

Abstract Although the individual has been focus of most research into judgment and decision-making (JDM), important decisions in real world are often made collectively rather than individually, a tendency that increased recent times with opportunities for easy information exchange through Internet. From this perspective, JDM factors social context generalizability mundane realism relative to which ignores it. We delineate problem-space within we locate protocols used study or support collective JDM, identify common question posed by all these protocols—‘ What leading opinion change better (‘virtuous change’) agents? ’—and propose modeling approach paradigm using structured groups (i.e., some constraints on their interaction), answering question. This paradigm, based studies judge-adviser systems, avoids need interacting attendant logistical problems, lack power, poor experimental control. report an experiment our effects group size diversity judgmental forecasting performance illustrate approach. The found U-shaped effect probability change, but no amount virtuous change. Implications development more externally valid empirical theories design structured-group techniques discussed.

Opinion percolation in structured population

In a recent work (Shao et al., 2009), a nonconsensus opinion (NCO) model was proposed, where two opinions can stably coexist by forming clusters of agents holding the same opinion. The NCO model on lattices and several complex networks displays a phase transition behavior, which is characterized by a large spanning cluster of nodes holding the same opinion appears when the initial fraction of n...

Opinion leadership in small groups

Senior Editor: Steven Shugan The role of opinion leaders in the diffusion of innovation has recently come under scrutiny: On the one hand, their central role in accelerating diffusion has been recognized in industry, academia, and the popular media. On the other hand, it has been argued that opinion leaders do not create contagion processes that differ significantly from those of other types of...

Sustainability: Virtuous or Vulgar?

Progress in understanding and achieving sustainability requires addressing it as both a scientific and an ethical issue. If sustainability is defined as “meeting human needs in a socially just manner without depriving ecosystems of their health,” most of the words in its definition are normative or value laden. Depending on how critical normative terms such as “human needs” and “ecosystem healt...

The epistemically virtuous clinician.

Today, modern Western medicine is facing a quality-of-care crisis that is undermining the patient-physician relationship. In this paper, a notion of the epistemically virtuous clinician is proposed in terms of both the reliabilist and responsibilist versions of virtue epistemology, in order to help address this crisis. To that end, a clinical case study from the literature is first reconstructe...

Meaningful Change Detection in Structured Data Sudarshan

Detecting changes by comparing data snapshots is an important requirement for diierence queries, active databases, and version and connguration management. In this paper we focus on detecting meaningful changes in hierarchically structured data, such as nested-object data. This problem is much more challenging than the corresponding one for re-lational or at-le data. In order to describe change...
